“Is There an Obligation to Obey the Constitution?”

This will be the second meeting of our new Legal Philosophers Discussion Group.

Is there an obligation to obey the constitution? Yes, because the constitution is sufficiently just and officials accept the benefits it provides. They have a duty to uphold not only its 'written' laws but also its 'unwritten' norms like accountability, judicial independence, and the rule of law. Ignoring these norms means voluntarily taking the benefits of a just system without supporting it, which is unfair.

It will be a 10-10 format, where the speaker can distribute up to 10 pages for pre-read, or use up to 10 minutes of presentation, or any combination thereof (3 pages, 7 minutes, etc.). There will be (modest) lunch, and discussion. All faculty members are welcome, but we need an RSVP so that we know how much food to order.
